Climate Change, Climate Variability, and Two Summers from Hell

Australia is known as a land of droughts and flooding rains, a cycle largely driven by the “ocean modes” ENSO (El Nino/La Nina and the Southern Oscillation), and the recently identified Indian Ocean Dipole. These are examples of Climate Variability, and are the key drivers of our seasonal climate. However, Climate Change is driving both to more extreme conditions. To understand what is happening in Australia, and in particular what drove both the 2019-2020 fires, and this year’s floods, we need to understand both.
