Before Shakespeare

For most Australians, English literature starts with Shakespeare in the 16th century. But English literature has a history which stretches back nine hundred years before that. Take a look at the beginnings of English literature in the seventh century, and trace its progress from then until the sixteenth, looking at the evolution of the English language as well.

  1. Understand the centuries of the evolution of English language and literature before Shakespeare.
  2. Evaluate the changes brought about in English society by its becoming part of Chistendom.
  3. Recognise that literature tells us a lot about the society which produced it.
