Ben Chifley's Open Secret

Australia's first postwar prime minister ran the country very largely from his room in the Hotel Kurrajong in Canberra, with the help of his long-time secretary/companion. The media all knew about his relationship with her and perhaps with her elder sister, but were silent because of their respect for one of Labor’s greatest leaders. Today we look at Chifley's tough childhood, his rise through the union movement and the Labor Party, and at his troubled personal life, and visit his two shrines - his home in Bathurst and his room at the Kurrajong.
