In the early 1960s several young bands were formed which had a profound impact on world music. They came from the folk boom, the skiffle craze, rock and roll and, of course, the blues to forge a unique music which is still evolving today in modern rock bands. We examine examples of the “Big Four” Beat Groups: the Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Animals and the Yardbirds amongst other significant bands of that time.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Early British Blues and the Mersey Beat. We will look at the effects of Rock and Roll on the British and their American influences. We will also see the formation of skiffle groups, the folk movement and the American Folk Blues Festivals. Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Lonnie Donnegan.
  • The Liverpool Groups – The Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers. We will also see Bill J Kramer and the Dakotas, the Searchers and others.
  • The Rolling Stones – 50+ years on and still rocking! This entire night will cover the Stones influences on rock. We will see excellent examples of this band’s evolution to the forefront of rock, including the Babylon Tour, Hyde Park, The TAMI Show (their first and best performance ever!)
  • The Animals and the Yardbirds. We will cover the history of these two influential and diverse groups and how they affected the scene. One with great lead guitarists such as Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Paige. The other probably the best Blues/Rock Band ever with the great Eric Burdon as lead singer.
  • The Aftermath of this period – the post Mersey artists such as Van Morrison, Gary Moore, Led Zeppelin and the influence of Jimi Hendrix.
