This short course will introduce you to both the techniques and genres of poetry to unpack styles and approaches to writing poetry. Focus will be on writing poetry in a variety of genres and upon a number of subjects to find your ‘voice’ and style; so come along and learn how to ‘be a poet’.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Write poetry using and manipulating a variety of techniques to suit personal style and topic
  2. Read, analyse and evaluate the poetry of others to help inform their own writing
  3. Discern between techniques, styles, topics and imagery as to what is effective poetry and what is trite
  4. Discuss, evaluate and reflect upon the composing, editing and sharing of poetry as a process of literature.
