Fun With Feathers

Using watercolours, learn how to paint realistic and colourful feathers of various birds. Explore various colour mixes and paint applications, including multiple watercolour washes to build up intensity. Feathers supplied. All skill levels. Individual tuition and class demonstrations.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • Materials and Techniques. Comprehensive class demonstrations of watercolour mixing and matching to subject
  • Watercolour brush techniques demonstrated
  • Drawing and colour studies are completed before final painting.
  • Working with multiple watercolour washes to increase intensity of colour
  • Class and Individual Demonstrations.
  • Class Appraisal: Completed work to be appraised by tutor.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understand how various colours are mixed to produce a variety of hues
  2. Use watercolour brushes to achieve fine lines
  3. Utilise shadows and highlights to create form and solidity.
  4. Paint multiple washes to achieve desired intensity of colour.

MATERIALS LIST

  • HB, 2B Pencil or clutch pencil 0.5mm HB, 2B
  • Pencil sharpener
  • White plastic eraser
  • Grey kneadable eraser
  • Several pieces of smooth drawing paper A4 size
  • Magic Cellotape or masking tape
  • Baking paper or 1 sheet tracing paper
  • Magnifying glass, hand held (magnificiation x3)

Watercolours Winsor & Newton brand Artists’ Quality watercolour paints recommended. 5ml tubes

  • Cadmium Lemon (alt: Winsor Lemon)
  • Cadmium Yellow (alt: Winsor Yellow)
  • Cadmium Red (alt: Winsor Red)
  • Permanent Rose
  • French Ultramarine (alt: Ultramarine or Winsor Blue [Red Shade])
  • Cerulean Blue (alt: Winsor Blue [Green Shade])
  • Burnt Umber
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Sepia

Brushes

  • Round Sable: Sizes 0, 3, 5. Check the point of brush. Brushes should be Kolinsky Sable.
  • Nylon or synthetic: Size 0,3. Nylon brushes usually have red handles.

Watercolour Paper

  • Arches 300 gsm hot pressed (smooth) 2 x A4 sheet or 1 x A3 sheet or 56 x 76 cm sheet (can be cut into various sizes).
  • Cut before bringing to workshop OR if you prefer to work with a pad, it is less expensive to purchase an A3 pad and cut it to required size.
  • Smaller piece of watercolour paper for recording colours, Cut from A4 sheet.

Other Items Required

  • 2 x Water Containers (jars) or large plastic containers.
  • Palette (for mixing colours) can be ceramic or matt plastic. Ceramic plates work very well also.
  • Clean cotton rag, paper towels or tissues.

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
