Examine the reign of this controversial pharaoh, including a look at the role played by his queen Nefertiti. Akhenaten began his rule of Egypt as the pharaoh Amenhotep IV. However, he had developed his own, unique religious theology, which caused him to turn his back on traditional Egyptian worship and turn to the deity he believed to be the one true god, the physical ball of the sun, Aten.

Akhenaten and his wife, Nefertiti seem to have had an extraordinary partnership with suggestions that she was his equal on the throne. Akhenaten and Nefertiti are the most enigmatic of all Egypt’s royal families. Branded ‘the criminal Akhenaten’, he and his wife were the subject of damnation on their deaths, making it difficult to answer the many questions that remain to be answered about their reign. In recent years though one question has been answered: Akhenaten was the father of Tutankhamun.
