This course is for students who have completed studies of Ancient Greek language to an intermediate standard or who wish to brush up on previous Greek language studies. We will read book 6 of Homer’s Iliad in the original Greek and, along the way, consider the story of the Trojan war and its main heroes.

  • Homer Iliad VI with Introduction, Notes and Vocabulary by R. H. Jordan & J. A. Harrison, Bristol Classical Press 1985 or later reprint Bloomsbury Publishing, London.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Reading of continuous unabridged Homeric Greek;
  • Integrated discussion of the book’s context, the values of the heroes Hector and Achilles, their adherence to the heroic code and their fatalistic attitude to death.

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Read and understand unabridged passages of Homer with the assistance of a linguistic commentary;
  2. Discuss the social and cultural contexts of the Greek epic tradition;
  3. Discuss the mythological tradition of the Trojan War.

If you enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
