The Louvre or the Louvre Museum was founded in the 1793. Heir to the century of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, the Louvre was quickly accepted as the “museum among museums”. This morning we will examine 10 objects from the museum’s ancient collection, some famous, others obscure, all of them fascinating. The objects will be viewed into their social, cultural and political contexts.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • The Venus de Milo (really the Aphrodite of Melos)
  • Small bust of an Amarna princess, thought to be the wife of Tutankhamun
  • Bust of Germanicus (the man who should have been emperor of Rome)
and seven other items to be revealed on the day!

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Gain a respect for the ancient world through the examination of a number of objects housed in the museum and comprehend something of the societies that produced them.
  2. Feel confident when visiting ancient collections anywhere in the world to look out for the famous as well as the obscure.
