Avantgarde Movements in Architecture and Design Revisited

An overview of the emergence of the Avantgarde movements in the early 20th century. We focus on the importance and influence of these movements on both: the cultural contextualisation of the industrial revolution and the aesthetics and standardisation of industry itself.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • Introduction: Grasping the Industrial Revolution and its extensive impact on the system i.e. production, economy, sociology and culture, literally transforming western society. What was the multilayered factual foundation of the search for a completely new idea of existence and the invention of new code of economic production ? The subject will be elucidated including related fields like art, technology, Governance and urban/cultural change.
  • The Bauhaus and DeStijl: The answer of Central and Northern Europe to Industrialisation.
  • The Italian Futurists and Russian Constructivists: doomed to be viped by revolutions and competitors.
  • The British Arts and Crafts Movement and French Art Nouveau : traditionalism questioned in the face of emerging revolution of technology.
  • The impact of the Avantgarde Design Movements on today : How did the branding of the first Industrialised powers come to light and conclude ? A retrospective look on historic domino effect.

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Understanding the multilayered influence of the Industrial Revolution and Mass Production on related design disciplines, architecture and society in general.
  2. Mapping out the historic foundations of the socioeconomic, cultural and commercial context of today.
  3. Concentrating on how national identities of major industrialised powers positioned themselves in the new system and the impact of art and design disciplines on the issue.
  4. Exploring the close and interwoven ties between design, art, technology, production and economy and understanding how they shape sociocultural life and governance
  5. Having an insight on how todays open culture and open society developed by looking at a crucial historic turning point of intellectual debate and competition.
