Vietnam’s politics, history, religion and culture all explored through its fascinating literature. In this course Vietnam expert Walter Mason (author of “Destination Saigon”) takes us from the writings of 19th century mandarins to the varied literature of the Vietnamese diaspora in the 21st century. Along the way we detour through Vietnam’s intriguing Buddhist writings and the colonial explorations of French counts and Graham Greene.

  • After the War – war narratives, 80s writing from Vietnam and the diasporic experience


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Have a greater knowledge of Vietnam’s rich history, culture and literature.
  2. Comprehend the cultural differences at work at different parts of this geographically long country and see how Indochina influenced Western literature.
  3. Explain the richness and complexity of Vietnamese Buddhism and other religious traditions through the available literature in English.
  4. Explain and comprehend the literature of the Vietnamese war and the narratives that emerged afterwards, and to understand the rich literary inheritance of the Vietnamese diaspora.
