COURSE OUTLINE

  • Ancient Mathematics from Babylon to Egypt: Mathematics began at least five thousand years ago, in Ancient Babylon and Egypt. It appeared for practical reasons such as treading and land measurements, and developed into a complicated knowledge.
  • Ancient Greek Mathematics: Ancient Greeks learned mathematics from Egyptians and Babylonians. Greek mathematicians, such as Pythagoras, Euclid, Archimedes, changed unquestioning Egyptian knowledge, developing it into a deductive and logical, perfect and beautiful system.
  • Ancient Greek Mechanisms - Technologies, tricks and toys: Ancient Greeks developed mechanisms for agriculture, construction, rituals and entertainment. They performed complicated arithmetic calculations, time and distance measurement, and made mechanical and hydraulic toys.
  • Geometry in the Open Air: One can add fun to a walk by doing mathematics: measuring the height of a distant tree; width of a river; distance to a passer-by, like Ancient Greek mathematicians did.
  • Female Mathematicians of the Ancient World from Ehheduanna to Hypatia: Since Antiquity, the social position of women put significant difficulties before those wishing to do mathematics. Nevertheless, starting from Sumerian princess Enheduanna, women demonstrated their capacities in mathematics.
