In Antiquity the lands of present day Albania had been settled by Illyrian, Thracian and Greek tribes, then conquered by the Romans, ruled by Byzantium, overrun by Bulgarians and captured by the Venetian, Serbian and Ottoman Empires before the modern nation developed in 1912. Rich archaeological sites at Apollonia and Butrint, remnants of the ancient Via Egnatia, the amphitheatre and Venetian tower of Durrës, the Holy Trinity Church of Berat and the historic city centre of Gjirokastër are just some of the remaining witnesses to the country’s rich history, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and well worth visiting.
