Ideal for absolute beginners who have little to no experience with knitting or for those looking for a way to refresh their knowledge, this course will teach students the basics of this ever-popular craft. Starting from how to comfortably hold knitting needles and carry yarn, casting on and casting off, all the way to mastering the two basic stitches (garter and stocking) that can be used for any project. Students will also learn how to count rows, what gauge/tension is and why it’s important, as well as how to read and follow a beginners-level knitting pattern.

COURSE OUTLINE

  • How to hold knitting needles and carry yarn
  • Casting on and casting off
  • Mastering the two basic stitches of knitting, including the garter stitch and stocking stitch
  • Counting rows and stitches while working
  • Learning how to read a pattern and understanding its abbreviations
  • Looking at tension/gauge and the ways in which yarn and the size of the knitting needles being used can influence this
  • Troubleshooting and how to easily fix a mistake (e.g. a dropped stitch)

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Read, understand and follow a basic knitting pattern
  2. Cast on and cast off their work
  3. Knit a beginners-level project using two basic stitches, specifically the garter stitch and stocking stitch

MATERIALS LIST

  • 4mm knitting needles
  • 1 x 100g ball of 8ply (DK) yarn in any colour (except white, black or navy). Yarn is stocked at Spotlight, Lincraft, Big W, Kmart, Riot Art & Craft
  • Darning needle
  • Sewing scissors

IMPORTANT: Please arrive to the first class with all the relevant materials. A lack of materials is not just a handicap to you but to the ability to teach. Materials cost is not included in a course fee. In the event of a course being cancelled WEA cannot be held responsible for the purchase of any course materials. We therefore suggest you purchase your materials closer to the time of the course commencing.
