Autobiographical Art – Theory and Practice

Discover the theoretical foundations of Autobiographical Art, the philosophy behind it and how it has manifest through many artists' works. You will also have the opportunity to express your own creativity through practical demonstrations of art making using objects of your choosing. Extracting select autobiographical moments, you will explore the possibility of turning them into art objects: an old photograph, a book, a dress, a figurine or a piece of jewellery you will learn how to photograph them and transform them visually to tell your story. Participants are asked to bring 2 objects of autobiographical significance to photograph during the class.


COURSE OUTLINE

  • What is Autobiographical Art?
  • Critical analysis of key artists' works.
  • Identify, select and share autobiographical moments and objects.
  • Demonstrations of object-photography for the purpose of art making using perspective and light.
  • Collectively conceive and develop autobiographical artworks using Photoshop


PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Learn about foundations of Autobiographical Art.
  2. Introduction to imagining and interpreting Autobiographical Art in cultural, social, and historical contexts.
  3. Introduction to object-photography: “the infinity wall”, perspective and light.
  4. Understand image construction and the resultant meaning.
  5. Learn about colour theory and its relationship to meaning.
  6. Produce an original artwork as a digital file to print at any printing outlet.
