The Titanic of its day, the Batavia was the pride of the Dutch East India Company. It was on its maiden voyage to Java in 1628 when it met its doom off the coast of Western Australia in a mutiny, massacre, battle, and execution that established the first European settlers in Australia. The search and discovery of the wreck was crucial to the birth of Australian marine archaeology.
