William Hogarth (1697-1764) is known for his satirical depictions of English Society through his printed series of ‘A Rake’s Progress’ and ‘Marriage à la Mode’ whilst Thomas Gainsborough (1727 -1788) painted the landed aristocracy in such much loved National Gallery London paintings as ‘Mr & Mrs Andrews’ shown upon their lands. Gainsborough’s ‘The Blue Boy’ left the United Kingdom in 1922 and for the last 100 years has been in California, USA and will revisit London from January to May 2022. The rich images of both artists can be explored to tell us endless information about English society in the 18th century – the people, habits, prejudices and triumphs.
