The former aristocratic maritime Republic of Ragusa was once a prosperous free state for half a millennium. Earlier it had stood under Byzantine and Venetian sovereignty. Despite almost complete destruction during a devastating earthquake in 1667, the city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979 thanks to its Baroque reconstruction and fully intact city walls. Severely damaged again by a seven months siege during the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, Dubrovnik has risen like Phoenix from the ashes in the later 1990s and early 2000s to become one of the top Mediterranean tourist destinations once again.
