This course is an introduction to Chinese for any student wishing to learn the language for business, travel or everyday use. Students will develop skills to use in conversation, reading, listening and writing. It follows on from Beginners 4 and is suitable for anyone who has completed this, or an equivalent program.

CLASS PLAN

Nine sessions that aim to build general intermediate comprehension and communication skills in intermediate Chinese.

CONTENT

Conversational Chinese and an introduction to cultural practices, with a focus on clear explanation of basic language principles.

• Expressing permission or prohibition
• Expressing about one’s ability
• Asking about time
• The indefinite measure word “ yi dianr”
• The negative connotation “na li”
• Expressing the continuation of a state or action with “ hai”
• Telling time
• Optative verbs: will, able, could, should, may, would etc.
• Sentences with serial verb phrases as purpose
• Sentences with double objects like to teach and to ask

PLANNED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

1. Tell people that you can speak Chinese but slowly.
2. Ask what time we do what.
3. Can, could, able, would, should, or may we do this or that.

LANGUAGE CLASS TRANSFER POLICYIf you are a new WEA Student and enrol into a language class and subsequently find that you are at the wrong level (whether too high or too low), you are permitted to transfer into another more suitable class at no additional cost, provided that the request is made within the first two classes and is in writing from your tutor directly to the Education Manager. After that point, an administration fee of $30 will apply.
