On 22 August 1872 the construction of the Australian Overland Telegraph Line between Port Augusta in South Australia and Darwin in the Northern Territory was completed, connecting Australia to the rest of the world. Spanning more than 3,000km through barren outback terrain, this achievement is one of the highlights of 19th century Australian engineering endeavours, which took almost two decades to complete from first discussions of possible routes to the first message transmitted. It also served as blueprint for trans-continental road and railway infrastructure.
